Hello Everyone,YES, we need rentals in cohousing communities. I fall in that category that Sharon mentions. I am 32, and will be buying a house within the next couple of years. Before making an investment in a co-housing community, I would like to rent in one and see how the idea translates into reality.
I am fortunate to have found a room to rent in a home at Two Acre Wood in Sebastopol, CA. As a matter of fact, I am moving in next month. As a single and very independent woman, I would rather not share a household with other people. My ideal would be to rent (and then to own) a studio or a small 2-bedroom home. My desire to experience co-housing first hand before purchasing a home has led me to compromise on my ideal and share a household, which I am sure will be just fine. But I would have much rather been able to rent a space of my own.
I live in Northern CA, where home prices are exhorbitant. I am a professional woman with a middle management job. But, because of home prices where I live, I cannot afford to buy a home right now. If it weren't for wonderful parents who are financially able to help me buy a house, homeownership would come to me in a distant future. There are other people like me out there, who are also interested in being a part of an intentional community. Having homes/apartments available for rent would make it possible for people like me to create community, even if we are not able to buy a home righ away.
Respectfully, Jeannette Castaneda

Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 09:00:30 -0500Rentals are so necessary to housing the 18-30 year olds who are still on themove and looking at life. We miss their energy when we don't have enough rentals. Providing more space for this age group would build a faster feedinto cohousing than waiting another 20 years for cohousing children to buildnew projects. If I were to add anything to our project, it would be 2-3 large bedrooms with private baths and good sized closets around a shared sitting room and kitchen.Using the commonhouse kitchen and living space might not be sufficient sinceone doesn't want the people "living" in the commonhouse to have a different relationship to the space or the community than other residents. Plus this age group is looking for independence.
