-------------------------------------------------- Here is a message for you from http://web2mail.com The easy way to read and send POP email on the web -------------------------------------------------- Howdy Cohousing Friends, A couple of months ago, Sunset magazine invited its readers to "nominate" the places they live in to be one of the best communities in the US. (I'm out of town so don't have the exact language of the request.) My nieghbor at Swan's Market Cohousing (Oakland, CA) wrote the following to Sunset and I'm passing it on to you with her permission. Harriet wrote: "Three years ago, I moved into Swan's Market Cohousing in historic Old Oakland, California.. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Learning about my neighbors and myself through meetings, common dinners, and social events has created a place I'm always glad to return to. It allows me to balance privacy and community in my life. Several of us subscribe to Sunset so all your readers do not live in single family detached dwellings. The most frequent comment from friends and family who attended our open house was "it's so nice." This is not warmed over hippie housing, and yes, we all have our own kitchens and bathrooms. Our award winning community has 20 units and about 35 people, with a baby soon to arrive, living in a great location. We can walk to Chinatown, Jack London Square, many shops, restaurants, and twofarmers' markets. We have common dinners three times a week and often use recipes from the magazine. It is such a luxury to come home from work and know you don't have to cook dinner. New neighbors are gourmet cooks so the level of cooking, and eating, has gone up. During the summer, we often have potlucks on our walkway. In Northern California, there are about ten cohousing communities in urban and suburban settings. Please come and see how this Danish idea has been adapted in California.
