I like this subject. We are one of the few cohousings who do not have any vegetarians. Imagine that. However, most of us don't eat meat much. Anyway, it is cook's choice around Two Acre Wood. Cooks rule. If someone wants something to happen dinner wise we suggest they cook it. We shoot for organic and do "full disclosure" on the meal sign up sheet, which shows menu and organic-ness and some other details. When we found out that a couple of members were staying away from wheat, we offered non-wheat options. It was spontaneous though. The members didn't ask. I kind of want to accomodate people, is what I have found. Before I moved in here I rolled my eyes at the idea of cooking separate food for the kids. Now I don't mind much; it's not very much trouble and I care about the kids as persons and so want to do that for them. When we do serve meat, it flies off the serving dish! We have to plan for extra. Not sure how to explain this phenomenon, except that I think it seems a culinary treat for many of us. I have to recommend "Moosewood Cooks For a Crowd." There are many lovely vegetarian (and fish...I think...??) recipes in there that are so delicious that they make you not care if there is meat in your meal. Let us know how it all turns out.
