Perhaps the same name is used for different products. the pea gravel that I referred to is also called river-washed gravel (in Canada) since the small stones are very smooth and about 1/2", shouldn't get stuck in shoe treads and are too big to jump into most shoes.

I still flinch, remembering small pieces of gravel getting in my shoes after walking in the play area. They hurt and were irritating, requiring taking the shoe off to shake gravel out.
