Want to second and third this! I have a hearing loss and my wife has spinal
cord damage that makes a lot of noise stressful for her. In the cohousing we
lived in, we had to stop going to common meals altogether because of acoustics.
The community made an after the fact attempt and put up sound absorbing tiles
on the ceiling but the improvement was modest and not sufficient to allow me to
hear there during a noisy meal.

It must be built into the budget early or you will never get them in
later.

That is absolutely true. Almost every community "value engineers" out
(read eliminates for those not familiar with the jargon) the
soundproofing or noise control features initially designed for the
dining room. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

To have a usable meeting/dining room, it have to have comfortable
acoustics, and that means some method of sound control. Do anything in
your power to keep the money there for that important feature.

If not, you will have problems getting people there for meals, and
functions.
