Along these same lines, I was once the president of our college union. 
It was a very new college, like two years old and could have been 
abolished by the state at a whim. The President of the college, an 
extremely pro-union guy, asked for an off the record discussion about 
why the faculty kept throwing bricks at the administration and blocking 
every effort to get organized and move forward.

I said, "Because they believe you have ulterior motives. They see a 
great master mind in the sky pulling strings."

He said, "But we are an effing house of cards up here. They think we're 
that smart? We have no idea what we are doing!"

I think he was being honest but I could never convince the faculty of 
that. They would have seen his statement as part of the great 
conspiracy. Paranoia is its own world.
