At Winslow Cohousing, we have an orchard that was planted before the
buildings were even built. It is available for all to pick, and we have
work parties to maintain it. (and we have paid to have it pruned, and
are having a pruning class this weekend) There is always an abundance
of fruit, and we use the fruits both for common meals and individual
consumption. A few years we have had cider pressing parties, and
drink the cider at common meals and it goes to those doing the work for
the cider pressing. (I don't know exactly how many trees we have but at
least a couple plum, a couple peach, pear, cherry, and a dozen or more
apple trees, one fig, quince, etc). We actually have more of a problem
keeping the fruit from going to waste and ending up on the ground.
Altho we have had to post several times to kids to not pick the fruit
before it gets ripe (taking a bite and throwing the rest on the
ground). We have a problem with apple maggots, which is normal for
western washington. We are trying various solutions. The sweet
cherries do seem to get eaten by the birds before we can get them, and
sometimes the raccoons and squirrels have decimated the plums (they wait
right until the fruit gets ripe).
We eat lots of apple cobblers in the fall at common meals.
We have some nut trees, but I think the squirrels tend to eat all of
them (hazelnuts at least).

Are the fruits/nuts shared with all the community members even if they did not work in the orchard or given for community meals, or are folks who work in the orchardgiven first dibs on the fruit/nuts, or what?
