we have an LLC for "our" electric car, and are planning on adding a
truck to that policy. It was the best way to stay legal with the
insurance company and to not add to any one person's insurance costs or
liability. Turns out that having lots of people on the policy is not
additional cost, but adding people above or below a certain age or with
bad driving records costs more. The cost for insurance for the truck
for a year was $690 add-on to the existing policy, which seems really
reasonable. It is an older truck.
I think Marci Burkel set the LLC up for our group, she is a lawyer who
lives in Winslow Cohousing.
The car/truck group is totally separate from our cohousing group, our
insurance on our buildings does not include any vehicles.
For the truck we are looking at charging a per mile fee, and having that
include gas.
The only community "subsidy" is providing a parking place for the vehicle. -audrey Winslow Cohousing cohousing-l-request [at] cohousing.org wrote:

The owner wants to change this and an LLC has been suggested as being used successfully in other coho communities On the basis of an online search, foming an LLC seems complicated and costs money (no surprise there) and requires amongst other things filing tax returns for the LLC with state and federal governments. As a simpler alternative, a couple of Coho -L archive entries state that one is covered by one's own personal auto insurance while driving the "borrowed" vehicle.Transfer of money and any sharing of costs seems to be a potential "biggie". Are there folks who have experience in vehicle sharing co-ops who are willing to share their experiences, good and bad, and offer specific advice?Michael Barrett ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 05:59:09 -0700 From: Nancy Baumeister <nancybee [at] peak.org> Subject: Re: [C-L]_ Group ownership of a truck To: Cohousing-L <cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org> Cc: Megan Foster <megan [at] shadowlakevillage.org>, Will Stacy <will [at] shadowlakevillage.org>, Will Butler <whbutler [at] gmail.com>, Rachel Christensen <lovesturtles [at] gmail.com>, Fred Mignone <fred [at] shadowlakevillage.org>, Nancy Mignone <nancy [at] shadowlakevillage.org>, Alan Raflo <araflo [at] vt.edu>, Carol Brandt <cbbrandt [at] vt.edu> Message-ID: <4A48BA9D.5060403 [at] peak.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowedThere are several people interested in doing this where I live as well.
