A cohousing developer is investigating a site in Maplewood, New Jersey, for a cohousing community. Maplewood is a charming, lively town in Northern New Jersey (EssexCounty). It is on the Midtown Direct train line to NYC, withexpress service to NY Penn Station taking less than 30 minutes, so it is convenient for people working in the city or for day trips. The village center is very walkable, with a movie theater, asupermarket, good restaurants at all price levels, a bookstore, and more. The area schools are excellent. The residents are a diverse, sophisticated, and interesting mix of long-time New Jerseyans andrecent arrivals from Manhattan and Brooklyn seeking more closet spaceand a yard. It's a very artsy area, with nationally known writers and journalists as well as musicians and people in theater and television. My next-door neighbor was the makeup artist for The Sopranos! The site is about a block from the village center and the train station, and right across the street from several acres of parks and recreation facilities. It would be easy to live there without a car. The project would be a multi-family building, probably 45 to 50 units, organized as a condominium. It would be a green building, almost certainly LEED-certified. If you are interested in receiving updates on this project, please subscribe to the maplewood_cohousing Yahoo group.
