It's also security. Our commonhouse is also the "lobby" for many of our units. 
The stairways go up to our corridors and other rooms in the CH. That is very 
nice when we don't have to go out in the rain to go to the CH but not so nice 
when random people start wandering around. One woman locked herself up in the 
office and took over the computer. No one knew who she was.
