I like Beverly Jones Redekop 10/8/15 post about "privacy in cohousing"
http://lists.cohousing.org/archives/cohousing-l/msg39585.html
tho I would reword one key sentence:

>Many garage-oriented neighbourhoods today have too much privacy and
>some of the sixties experiments had too much connection.

I think a better way to express the same idea is:

Many garage-oriented neighbourhoods today provide too few
opportunities for connection with neighbors while some of the sixties
experiments provided too few opportunities for privacy. Cohousing
provides a better balance of facilities for privacy and for connection
 with neighbors.

Regarding sun exposure that Philip noted... We have two adirondack
chairs in our east facing front yard and a large spruce tree on the
south edge of the yard. We can generally move the chairs to some
shade or sun as we desire.

We dont live in cohousing but on a friendly block in Minneapolis. We
keep a couple folding chairs in the front hall in case a neighbor
stops by tho this does not happen often. We sometimes take our lunch
to those chairs. Unfortunately our neighbors dont spend much time in
their front yards tho a few spend time gardening in their front yards.
