Actually it’s both, and all the “co” suggest in working with others.   
Appreciate everyone’s attention to keeping clear definitions of terms.  Shared 
housing is shared housing (one house shared by unrelated people) and cohousing 
is something quite different. You could have a shared house within a cohousing 
neighborhood.  We need all sorts of coopertative, collaborative, 
community-oriented housing of which cohousing is one type.  If the term loses 
it clear definition it becomes less useful and thus those of us who care need 
to keep clarifying.
