The solution is simple, and has been around for a long time.
A discussion forum like this one: https://thecohousinglife.proboards.com/
When you create an account on a proboards forum, you have the option in your Settings to receive email notifications.

Free forums have some minimal advertising. A nominal fee (from the board owner) provides an ad-free experience to all.

I have hosted communities on a variety of topics on Proboards for years. There are other companies that provide this service as well. I believe some website hosts offer forum plug-ins too.

I also date back to the days of acoustic couplers, so I know whereof i
speak when I say:

Actually email is about the worst possible way to have discussions like
these.

The only thing good about it compared to technology designed specifically
for group discussion, like Reddit, is that it’s a push system (stuff just
arrived in my email box) rather than a pull system (I have to take action
to access the content like visit a website). But even that advantage is
lost if I’m someone who doesn’t use email regularly. In that case, it’s
just as much pull based as Facebook.

Or, as my kids would say, “Ok, Boomer.”

Ps: if you think the cloud is like FTP, yer doin the cloud wrong.

I will admit I am older and have been around the Internet since before
there was an Internet, but in all honesty, there has never been a
better way to communicate than the listserv for many specialized
topics like this. There isn't a better solution. Maybe we need to get
young people to learn to appreciate the value of these "old as dirt"
platforms. Some folks think that the Cloud is new. It isn't, it has
been around since the late 70s and was called FTP. There really is no
alternative unless you want to dumb things down. All the email based
groups such as gmail offers are simply listservs.
