OUV in Vancouver (*small* urban cohousing - 12 units) has adopted (9-unit) Seattle CHUC's model of no bean counting. Every chef foots the bill for their own meal; we all cook on a fixed schedule. No accounts to reconcile, no tickets. You wanna cook lobster thermidor? Have at! But you will pay the tab. It promotes equity - every cook lead gets to scale the meal to their economic ability. Everyone is expected to cook something delicious and nutritious, and no prejudice if it is humble and basic. It does need to be inclusive of diets. Love to see how this could be adapted to larger cohousing. Yes, I know - we will learn lots of lessons when we move in. I'm sure we'll take some retooling. But we are low-key people with slacker aesthetics. And CHUC has it going already. We have also decided to time our common meals as such, on a two week basis: M-W-F-Su Tu-Th-Sat ...to be explicitly offset with our neighbouring community Little Mountain Cohousing, who has the same cadence on opposite days, so that we can mutually feed.
