How do you handle a wait list for coho homes?

In response to the question from Patricia Bailey of Cohousing ABQ, here’s how
we handle the idea of a wait list for future sales at Takoma Village Cohousing
in Washington, D.C.

We’ve learned you can never predict when someone will be interested in
cohousing, interested in your specific community, interested in the specific
unit that’s available and — all at the same time — actually ready to buy.
Instead of a wait list, we invite people to subscribe to our email notification
list. We tell them that people on that list are among the first to be notified
when a home is for sale or rent. Then they all have the opportunity to move
forward toward a purchase if they’re interested. No promises are made.

We do not approve membership in the community, as seems to be the case in the
original post. Instead, we strongly encourage anyone interested in living at
Takoma Village to follow the steps in our Guide for Prospective Residents
<https://takomavillage.org/page/39042~755756/guide-for-prospective-residents>.
Those who have already educated themselves about our community and the
expectations of living here are likely to be viewed more positively during the
sale process.
