We built bike sheds on every home. No one uses those. So we put bike racks (not nearly enough) in a few places. The only bikes in those stay forever. So we took a room in our basement and have 40-50 bikes stored, almost all of which are there all the time, never used. I think the folk that use their bikes the most have them in their carports, in front of the cars, or at their homes. The kids who ride just leave them all over. In my opinion, the challenge of community storage space is the people define "storage" quite differently. I expect it would be best, if starting from scratch, to have two types of storage--"occasional use" for the people like me who dream of biking again someday, and in another location: "regular use" for the people who ride weekly or more, so that they can get their bikes easily. Also, useful to have a person who goes through the storage every year to encourage removal of unused bicycles. -Liz (The Rev.
