Wonderful article on Strong Towns by an architect who has created a prototype 
for a house for all ages.

Building/Life Phase One: Building, Building Equity
Start with a house with 2 units and rent one, perhaps the larger one.

Building/ Life Phase Two: Making Room
With a new relationship, change the proportions to accommodate space for 2 and 
entertaining.

Building/Life Phase Three: Here We Grow
Absorb the whole house to make room for children.

Building/Life Phase Four: And Away They Go
As the children leave, shrink back to one part of the house and rent the other.
