Here are two free downloadable handouts about three kinds of community
conflict that we'll explore in my upcoming class on this topic
starting this Saturday, January 17. It's not too late to join the
class - see below. The handouts are:
* Working Effectively with Three Kinds of Community Conflict"
* How the Three Kinds of Community Conflict Can Combine and
Reinforce Each Other"

Conflict often looks like personal issues between community members.
Thus community conflict is usually treated simply as _Interpersonal
Conflict_ However, conflict can also arise from what I call
_Structural Conflict_, when crucial community agreements and policies
about governance, committees, the community's values and mission,
acceptable behaviors, and so on are _missing._ _Especially
Challenging Behaviors_ (described in my article series in Communities
magazine), include aggression, self-centeredness, apparent lack of
self-awareness, little to no empathy or "transactional empathy,"
and/or frequently playing the victim.
Both Structural Conflict and Especially Challenging Behaviors almost
always also trigger Interpersonal Conflict as well. And, as is
described in the second handout, the different kinds of conflict can
combine and exacerbate each other, making it hard to know what's going
on and what to do about it.
I address this in my class starting this Saturday, with real-life
stories from real communities about how they effectively addressed
each kind of conflict -- field-tested advice you can use in your group
right away.
