Dear Cohousing Friends - We anticipate fully moving into Rachel Carson EcoVillage in early 2027. Our Community Engagement Group is working on our plan to ensure good ongoing volunteer contributions to the upkeep of RCE. We appreciate the perspectives shared by Laird Schaub and others through Cohousing Alliance webinars, etc. At RCE, all adult residents of the community, including renters, agree upfront to contributing 4-8 hours per month towards upkeep of the community. We are curious as to how other cohousing communities handle the following questions and related subjects. What are the most worthwhile approaches to creating a good culture of participation in our new community? What has worked for you? Do we want to more specificallly quantify how much everyone should contribute in terms of hours? Do we want to keep track of hours? If not hours, what do we need to keep track of? How? Will we make records available all the time? What work counts? Does all work have equal value? Is it okay to contribute money in place of labor? Should there be limitations on that? How will we navigate tension over perceptions of uneven contribution Should children be expected to contribute? Thank you for your insights, Stu Bush (he/him) www.Rachelcarsonecovillage.org <http://www.rachelcarsonecovillage.org/>
