Even if consumer durables wear out 10 times faster when shared by ten people there is still a big financial saving in the sharing. This is the saving on interest (which of course compounds) from having 1/10th the amount of capital tied up in the consumer durables (in Australia thats a savinging of 9 to 10% per annum). Also as items where out they can be replaced by the most efficient model around so that you can keep up with efficiency improvements. How the savings that are generated are used is up to the individual they can be used to finance some other form of consumption, or to enable one to work less. Ian Higginbottom (Cascade Cohousing)
