Excellent points.  A minor nit, though.  I don't think Boston has dismantled 
any elevated expressways to date.  We are in the early stages of a massive 
project / boondoggle to bury the Central Artery and replace the ground level 
with some buildings and some parks.  It will be an amazing accomplishment if 
/ when completed.  That will be at least 6 years and $10 Billion from now.  
A fine example of humanizing the city is Tom McCall Park in Portland OR, 
which used to be a major roadway, but is now a park on the banks of the 
Willamette.
