In reading all this, everyone's dissatisfaction with the Christmas thing, I
thought how foolish everyone was, because as an atheist, I've thought it
only right that we ban all religious symbols, everywhere we can.

Then I realized, that me and my kind, have been the oppressors here, and I
had this weird moment of dislocation in which I felt sympathy for the
underdog--anyone who wanted a religious symbol in a common space, and
didn't get it.

This frisson is the reason I read these lists. The accidental empathy one
gets reading honest exchanges between people not too angry to grant each
other the status of humanity is about the only thing that gives me any hope
for the human race, at all.
