Thomas I was asked to give one reason for hiring a Cost Engineer/Project Manager ( a Quantity Surveyor/Project Manager, in Canada) so I did. Naturally, the people paying the "shot" would sit down with the Cost Engineer/Project Manager and develop the criteria for the architect they wish to hire--for example, do they know the required info on neighborhood design?--have they ever had a project evaluated by a third party? etc. etc. As well the Cost Engineer/Project Manager will do a thorough check on all the references the architect gives. It's really simple, any venture requires a competent Manager--the rest of the world operates that way--designing and building a cohousing neighborhood is no different. Regarding biblio on info -- contact Jan Gehl or read his books and papers.
