I gave a presentation at the Simple Living Conference in Seattle
yesterday and as part of my interactive presentation a several folks
made reference to doing a dinner club as a community activity. One
person mentioned that one group uses a two car garage, which they
cleaned up, added a scrounged carpet, some wall hangings, lamps and a
couch from thrift stores and garage sales and have created what sounds
like a very nice, very low budget "common house" where they do their
group dinners 3 nights a week.

As I was leaving the reception afterwards, I saw 8 people huddled in a
corner organizing a dinner group! I got so jazzed about it that I came
home and wrote the beginnings of an essay called: Tearing down the
fences, rebuilding community in your neighborhood. If you know of
places where people are creating community in informal, retrofit sort
of ways I would appreciate you sharing that.
