Her analysis of increasing isolation -- what she calls cocooning -- indicates this is a long-term phenomenon (greater than 20 years). In addition, there was an article in "Atlantic Monthly" just before the 1992 U.S. presidential election that dealt with the political strategies needed to get the votes of isolated 'burb residents. Don't recall the issue # but the cover story was about isolation and flight to the suburbs. Hope this helps.
