How to UNSUBSCRIBE from COHOUSING-L (This mesage also includes alternatives to just unsubbing and policy ruminations at end of message, read on if you care to. Fred) You can always ask me for help. PLEASE avoid posting messages to the list asking for help unsubscribing. Getting off the list is easy if you know how. You were told how in the welcome message when you subscribed. SAVE WELCOME MESSAGES WHEN YOU SUBSCRIBE TO ANY LIST To get a fresh copy send the command info cohousing-L to listserv [at] uci.com To get off the list send the command: UNSUBSCRIBE COHOUSING-L (Note that no name or argument is required or allowed!) ############################################################################# # Send list related COMMANDS to: listserv [at] uci.com # Post messages ABOUT COHOUSING ONLY to: cohousing-L [at] uci.com # Send for help etc. to sysop (a human) to: # cohousing-L-request [at] uci.com ( or fholson [at] uci.com) # # WWW URL: http://seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu/~stanifor/cohousing.html # Gopher: gopher://gopher.uci.com # # If you are thinking about unsubscribing because of information # overload, check out the gopher list archives as a way to read # Cohousing-L bbs style without filling up your mailbox. ##################################################################### ALTERNATIVES TO JUST UNSUBSCRIBING If your reason for unsubscribing is information overload (the most frequent reason...) you may wish to consider one of three strategies other than just dropping your subscription discussed below -- Digest mode, Gopher, WWW. Whatever you decide, thanks for being with us. Fred ***** DIGEST MODE ***** Digest mode reduces mail from the list to one (long) message per day with a distinctive subject line that makes it easy to keep track of (and delete :) ) Use the command: SET COHOUSING-L MAIL DIGEST All messages for the day sent in one message. When users set their mail mode to "digest", they will receive postings from the list only once a day, bundled as one message. This is great for people who are annoyed by a lot of messages or who only check there mail once a day. (Includes 'noack' mode i.e. your message is not sent back to you) When replying to a message in a 'digest', please manually enter the appropriate Subject/Thread -- otherwise your reply will have the subject: "RE: COHOUSING-L digest ##" which isn't very helpful. ***** GOPHER ***** An alternate way to read or browse the COHOUSING-L messages -- current and archived -- is via Gopher. There is one line/link per message listed by the subject line by month. This archive is updated automatically and therefore always up-to-date. The URL is: gopher://gopher.uci.com/ Note that at this time the Cohousing-L Gopher does not include a way to post messages. To post to the list you will need to subscribe as above. If you prefer to read messages via gopher you will probably wish to send the command: SET COHOUSING-L MAIL POSTPONE to LISTSERV [at] UCI.COM so the messages are not sent by email. ***** WWW **** The archives can be read via the developing Cohousing World Wide Web site by category (e.g. commonhouses or group process) The URL is : http://seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu/~stanifor/cohousing.html (There's a link to the gopher too, of course) LIST MANAGEMENT UNSUB REQUEST POLICY THOUGHTS In general I have followed a policy of informing people how to send commands to subscribe, unsubscribe etc rather than do it for them. My logic is that people need to learn how to do this for themselves. But I get tired of this sometimes, partcularly when someone seems to have great difficulty learning or difficulty with the idiosyncracies that do happen with the listserver sometimes. The "unsubscribe me from the list" messages that get distributed over the the list are particularly annoying. So I think I'll start unsubbing those folks and sending them a note of how they should have done it. I'll try to gently reprimand them as well -- wouldn't want to encourage inappropriate posting of unsub requests! BTW Cohousing-L will be moving to a new listserver around the first of the year tho details have not been worked out yet. Two reasonable alternatives are being considered. Anyone with suggestions as to where we might move or changes that might be considered at that time (archives for example) are encouraged to write to me directly. It is not appropriate to discus to move (prominently at least) over the list yet. Fred the Cohousing-L list manager -- Fred H.
