        FWIW, Greyrock Commons is using hardiplank siding.  We obviously 
can't speak to its durability, since it's just barely been placed on the 
first few buildings (the Common House is just *weeks* away from being 
finished, BTW!).  We did consider environmental effects, durability, and 
the rest but I don't recall the details now.  Our decision, made in a 
rush of other details at the time, was probably based more on the assurances 
of our professionals than on anyone's personal experience or deep research.  
It certainly *looks* fine.  I did live in Australia for four years, but
did not hear of hardiplank until just last year so I'm not much help 
there.  There are a few folks from Australia on this list; they may offer 
you more help.
