Hello again from that journalist who feels happily responsible for stimulating some fascinating discussions of diversity on the list... and thanks to those who have responded that way and directly to me. I have one more request, now that I am right down to the wire on a July 1 deadline to the newspaper, Sojourner (my earlier deadline was for my own research purposes) and now that I have sifted through the enormous quantity of material I have collected. BTW, Sojourner is, according to its editor, distributed nationally and contrary to my first understanding, the article isn't especially focused on the Boston area. Anyway... here's my question for those who are living in cohousing or building or at least have a site well in hand: How many members of your group are not white, namely: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, Native Americans...(and anyone else I'm leaving out)? Re: affordability, it's more relative and perhaps subjective, but does your project include housing that would be considered "affordable" in your area? Even less amendable to hard numbers, but any comments from those who believe your group has achieved--or has trouble achieving--diversity in other areas like gender, age, family status, sexual orientation, political (well--maybe I don't need to hear anymore about that) -- what else? I really just need to get a sense of what's out there beyond all the interesting discussions...so just brief comments and, again, I'll assume a response means it's o.k. to publish. Thanks and thanks again... it's been an education and a half and fascinating! Donna from Commonweal Cohousing soon-to-be Grafton, Mass.
