Architects who do multi -family housing fairly consistently report that kids gravitate toward hardscape where they can ride bikes and skate and play hopscotch and draw with sidewalk chalk and gambol on climbing structures. At the conference, I believe it was Kathryn Lorenz who pointed out that at Nyland, where there are over 30 acres of open space, some of it very grassy, this is also true. Of course, as child friendly as hardscape may be, a community wouldn't want to put in a whole lot, I'm sure. Just don't forget to have some of it , preferably adjacent to or very close to your common house. Joani
