Hi Zev, Good point ! A Cohousing community could set up a central supply system for emergency preparedness, Y2K or otherwise (hurricane, power outage, snow bound conditions etc.) A water supply is a vital need. Consider rainwater catchment systems in the design from the beginning, it can't hurt ! Make sure you have a way to make this water potable. A dry food supply could be maintained and rotated in the Common House as part of a cooperative bulk food buying system, if you don't need it, great, if you do need it, backup food is there. A Common House would also be a great place to store and maintain First Aid supplies, beyond what an average household would normally have. Home heating and power for lights and communication devices are still needed, as for every non-Cohousing household, but with the above support from a community effort, Cohousers will be able to ride out the storm together, and perhaps even assist the wider community.
