I host a webring, and belong to a number of others.

They do enhance the visibility of your website, and can help to build a
"community" of websites with specific interests.  While there are a wide range
of valuable webrings (and you're welcome to join as many as you want), it is
best to join webrings that are specifically relevant to your interests.

I think it's a great idea, and encourage folks to join it.

As mentioned, your site can belong to multiple web rings.  But, I suggest only
joining those that are truly relevant to your purpose (for example intentional
communities, sustainability, perhaps spirituality) rather than just joining
rings that are there supposedly to increase traffic.  There are thousands of
webrings searchable at http://www.webring.org/index.html#ringworld
