At Pinakarri we used a pressed steel and polystyrene sandwich, like coolroom panels, for our gabled ceilings/roofs. The insulation factor for 100mm (about 4 inches) is R2.6. I'm not sure that the production of the material is environmentally sound however, with 12 foot spans it saved us the cost and use of roofing timber. This matters in a country where virgin jarrah, a slow growing native hardwood is cheap enough to be hidden in a roof. On a slightly different innovation, the residents of Pinakarri's 13 houses recently subscribed to Naturalpower. The electricity provider commits to using the Naturalpower surcharge to feed sustainably produced electricity into the grid. Regards Robyn
