At Pathways we spent an afternoon writing things on the stud walls before the 
insulation and drywall went on.  Hopes and dreams, ideas, names, and so on.  
Writing on the ceiling beams may be more of a challenge, but I'm sure it can 
be done.  

As for a media event, you could put a time capsule in there somewhere.
