San Jose, CA also saw a similar reaction when a women's community group wanted to develop it's land for a Hispanic neighborhood, building housing, a community center, etc. Cohousing was to be the model and input was sought from the neighborhood. Most didn't want that model, but desired a sfh with the incumbent privacy, after living in crowded quarters. The project was built, but many compromises were made. It is a successful community today. The irony was that many of the neighbors could't afford to buy the homes once they were priced. They can be involved in the community center, however. >The conclusion seemed to be that for most really low-income folks the idea >of living in a group, going to meetings, having to make decisions with other >people, and all the other mechanisms of cohousing were kind of appalling - >the exact opposite of what they wanted.
