There was an recent article in the Tuft's University School of Veterinary
Medicine newsletter, Catnip, on outdoor cat enclosures.  They did not
recommend invisible fencing.  Unfortunately, Catnip does not post their
articles on the web otherwise I would listed the article's URL.

BTW, my two kitties, Larry&Simon, (actually rather large (> 18 lbs) cats)
were dumpster FIV+ cats who I foster-cared and later adopted.  They seem
content to just have their view of the outside through the screened window
on their carpet-lined window sill perch.
