Note from Fred: I looked for the article that Pam refers to but did not
find it. I looked in the cohousing-L archives and on the web. I did find
an article in the Cohousing Magazine (winter '97) that mentions Grail
(misspelled "Grell") as part of an article about winners of a HUD (US Dept
of Housing and Urban Development; I suspect "JUD" is a typo below) awards
for "promising and inovative techniques t expand home ownership in
America". Grail is not listed in the cohousing community database (
http://www.cohousing.org/cmty/groups-us.html#California )

Pam if you could give me a few more clues maybe I could track down the
article.

-------------------- FORWARDED MESSAGE FOLLOWS --------------------

Grail community in San Jose CA began with a community center, and built a
new community center and child care center INSTEAD of a common house. The
advantage of having a really nice place to meet and build was obvious.
They really aren't cohousing, but if you look you will find an article I
wrote about them when they won a JUD award for affordable housing.
