When he's ready to use a piece of pipe, he just uses an ice pick to thread a piece of button- or nylon thread through a ping-pong ball, sets the ball just inside the pipe at one end, then goes around to the other end and sets a vaccuum cleaner (actually a shop-vac) against it.
