Hello,
I am Danielle from Songaia cohousing in Bothell
Washington. We have some picky eaters. Individual
families respond in different ways to a child's food
preferences. Some families require their kids to try
some of the main dish. On the other hand, Some
parents make peanut butter sandwiches fairly often.
We have community meals 5 days a week and an
extensive pantry. My children like to eat at our
Common House. They don't like to miss common meals.
They usually like at least some of the food offered.
When the main dish is too spicy for small tongues, we
always have cheese, eggs, peanut butter and other
quick kid foods in the pantry. We get around
different dietary needs and preferences by offering
variety. We usually offer a salad bar, so people can
choose the condiments they like. We have several
choices during meals. For instance, We might have a
taco bar or potato bar so people can choose food
combinations they like. Another example would be a
chicken (and tofu version) curry stew with a salad
bar,and bread,and rice,and condiments like cheese or
hard-boiled eggs. If the lead cook decides that the
main dish might be too spicy or strange for kids, then
s/he often provides a kid friendly dish like macaroni
and cheese.
I don't know if this helped you, but please contact us
if you need help with your food program. I am very
happy with ours. It took a tremendous amount of work
to get it started, but it is very worth the effort. I
don't think that I could live without a common house
now.
Danielle
