Dear Raines, Thank you for helping to get this corrected. RoseWind should have
been listed as "built", as we are clearly comparable to many cohousings that
are in the anniversary directory. As readers of this list know, we are years
in, with some members who have been on site for ten years. Using that directory
format, RoseWind basics are:

RoseWind Cohousing
Port Townsend, WA
24 units. Town of 8000. 1995.
53 members. 40 adults and 13 children
42 residents on site as of 3-02

Homes
19 completed houses, 2 under construction, 3 still unbuilt.
Diverse size and style: 780-2800 sq ft. Construction techniques include
stick-frame, Rastra block, straw bale, and dome. 5 in-law apartments within
houses.

Common House
Completed April 2001. 2800 sq. ft. Kitchen, pantry, dining/meeting room with
lounge area, recreation room, youth room, patios, ADA bathrooms/doors/entry.

On-Site Common Facilities
Four and a half acres of commons in grass and thickets. Community vegetable
garden, young orchard. Mosaic well-pump house and garden shed. Equipment shed.
Coming projects are play structures and outdoor patio.

Site
9 acres in town, with pastures and trees in the surrounding neighborhood. About
half the site is grassy fields, with wild rose thickets and several older
trees. Most of town is about 5-10 minutes drive, or can be reached walking,
biking, or by bus. Path network; most homes around a central field.

Development Approach
Self-developed. Lot owners built homes of their choice.

Ownership
Non-profit mutual benefit corporation with Homeowners¹ Association. Lot
ownership is fee simple.

Unique Characteristics
Do-It-Yourself approach. Sense of community has grown while working together on
site planning, City process, home-building advice, garden and landscape work,
common house planning and construction, along with community meals and other
gatherings. Habitat for Humanity built two of the homes. Lots of creativity has
enlivened the landscaping and architecture. Very integrated into the
surrounding sunny Victorian seaport town which has an abundance of art, music,
boat festivals, and political activism.

Costs
Land $260,000. Infrastructure $240,000. Common House $280,000. Professional
consultations besides Common House $2000.

Funding Sources
Equity investment by members.

Professional team
Some consulting during CH planning with architects Kraus, Landis, and Village
Design.
Various local contractors for infrastructure, homes and CH.
Otherwise, none.
