RoseWind should have been listed as "built", as we are clearly comparable to many cohousings that are in the anniversary directory. As readers of this list know, we are years in, with some members who have been on site for ten years. Using that directory format, RoseWind basics are: RoseWind Cohousing Port Townsend, WA 24 units. Town of 8000. 1995. 53 members. 40 adults and 13 children 42 residents on site as of 3-02 Homes 19 completed houses, 2 under construction, 3 still unbuilt. Diverse size and style: 780-2800 sq ft. Construction techniques include stick-frame, Rastra block, straw bale, and dome. 5 in-law apartments within houses. Common House Completed April 2001. 2800 sq. ft. Kitchen, pantry, dining/meeting room with lounge area, recreation room, youth room, patios, ADA bathrooms/doors/entry. On-Site Common Facilities Four and a half acres of commons in grass and thickets. Community vegetable garden, young orchard. Mosaic well-pump house and garden shed. Equipment shed. Coming projects are play structures and outdoor patio. Site 9 acres in town, with pastures and trees in the surrounding neighborhood. About half the site is grassy fields, with wild rose thickets and several older trees. Most of town is about 5-10 minutes drive, or can be reached walking, biking, or by bus. Path network; most homes around a central field. Development Approach Self-developed. Lot owners built homes of their choice. Ownership Non-profit mutual benefit corporation with Homeowners¹ Association. Lot ownership is fee simple. Unique Characteristics Do-It-Yourself approach. Sense of community has grown while working together on site planning, City process, home-building advice, garden and landscape work, common house planning and construction, along with community meals and other gatherings. Habitat for Humanity built two of the homes. Lots of creativity has enlivened the landscaping and architecture. Very integrated into the surrounding sunny Victorian seaport town which has an abundance of art, music, boat festivals, and political activism. Costs Land $260,000. Infrastructure $240,000. Common House $280,000. Professional consultations besides Common House $2000. Funding Sources Equity investment by members. Professional team Some consulting during CH planning with architects Kraus, Landis, and Village Design. Various local contractors for infrastructure, homes and CH. Otherwise, none.
