questions about children at common meals?

Hi, This is Sylvie Kashdan of
Jackson Place Cohousing
800 Hiawatha Place South
Seattle, WA 98144
http://www.seattlecohousing.org
where we are trying to finish our kitchen so we can begin cooking common
meals in it.

Here at Jackson Place we have ten children, ranging in age from 9 months to
9 years, with two more on the way. Most of the children are under 7. Right
now, we are in the process of developing some guidelines for children at
common meals and would like to
know about other cohousing groups' experiences and what they have found most
effective.

I have been going through the Cohousing-L archives where I have found some
things, and will be passing on the relevant info to the rest of the group.

But, we would also appreciate it if people in other cohousing groups could
tell us about your current guidelines and experiences, and what you have
found that works and what doesn't work.

Here are the questions we are most interested in, as formulated by the
Jackson Place committee working on this issue:

Questions regarding children at common meals:

1. What have communities done about mitigating children's noise during
meals?

2. Are there expectations about children leaving and returning to the
table?

3. What are your rules and expectations for children's behavior during
meals?

4. Is there an adult in the kids' room during meals?

5. Is there a special seating arrangement for children?

A question not related to children:

When working people and/or parents are working on common meals, do you have
any special techniques to help them get dinner on the table on time? Do you
have any time-saving techniques?
