I hope that we will see varying models which push the boundaries of
cohousing to make it affordable for more people both with and absent
government assistance. Several coho knowledgeable folks have told me that
construction costs are substantially higher for bathrooms and kitchens and
thus - adding or subtracting say 25% square footage to a unit often won't
add/subtract that much to the costs unless it relates to the necessary
things for these two types of rooms.

One example I could envision would be either community ownership or parts
of a community owning one or several residential units which might have
shared bathrooms and kitchens (and living rooms probably) with multiple
bedrooms, where individuals and/or couples might rent individual bedrooms
in the unit- and some of them might later buy their own "regular units" in
the complex when they could better afford them - if there were re-sales.

Exploring ways to not need government support or to supplement it to make
more people potential cohousing members seems helpful to me. Doing things
"differently" including zoning, etc. - makes things more complicated of course.

Just some ideas! Thanks! George Marx, Alameda, California, USA
