Handling controversy well has been mentioned many times on the list by
current cohousers as the one factor that most convinced them to join a
cohousing group. The support for professional advice and training in
building and maintaining community life was certainly the thing that
convinced me that cohousing was a serious and workable concept.

Conflict of interests is also the first concern that all my non-cohousing
friends and family express about cohousing. How can you deal with all those
people? Are you nuts?

Don't be afraid to let new prospects attend regular meetings so they can see
how you are working through issues.

Include on your web site the professional support you have available and are
using to build the community and resolve conflict.

Don't expect prospects to trust the power of their own positive thinking --
or yours. If they are realistic, they know there will be rocks in the road.
And if they aren't realistic, in the end they won't be much help and will
probably be a block to effective action.
