Jim,

I read with interest in the article you posted that New View had a fire in
one of the homes. We, too, had a near-miss when someone left a pot on to
boil for two hours and came back to find the house filled with smoke (she
thought she had left the stove on "low" when it was on "high"). The ironic
thing about it was that there were people here at the time, but no one
heard their smoke alarm because all the windows and doors were closed.

It made me think two things: 1) how devastating it would be if any one
house actually caught fire, with the houses so close to one another; and 2)
there's got to be a way to make smoke alarms audible outside the houses so
that someone can enter a house and address the problem before a fire
starts.

Did any of the New View residents have thoughts about how to better prevent
fires in cohousing? I did go so far as to ask an electrician what it would
cost to install some sort of alarm or horn outside that would be hooked up
to the smoke alarms in a house. The whole thing sounded pretty expensive,
so I'm hoping for some other ideas . . .
