In response to Lynn's comparison of individual vs. collective designs.... The most beautiful examples of a more prescriptive (& community minded) approach can be seen in historic parts of Europe, where a particular look is preserved by its community. Here, the neighbourhood's overall presentation is greater than the sum of its parts. Here are some examples of aesthetic merit in housing patterns: - http://www.sanfrancisco.worldweb.com/PhotoGallery/CitySkylines/10-1063.html (housing pattern in San Francisco) - http://www.dorothycutter.com/photo.htm (housing pattern in Tuscan village) - http://www.artone.co.nz/images/bigs/oldnz.jpg (housing pattern in New Zealand) Metaphorically, this approach to cluster design is akin to the sound of my modem connecting to its server rather than the music playing in the background. It's America's national parks before Roosevelt, it's corporate governance under George Bush, ..... it's laissez faire approach crossing aesthetic boundaries. ;-) Hans Tilstra htpp://home.vicnet.net.au/~cohouse _______________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list Cohousing-L [at] cohousing.org Unsubscribe and other info: http://www.communityforum.net/mailman/listinfo/cohousing-l
