Re: Trash Generation/Dumpsters in Cohousing

Someone else will know volumes but one problem we have is that our large
dumpster is impossible for many of us to get trash into.

The top opening is too high for us to lift the top AND swing a large bag up
into the dumpster. The side openings have sliding doors that of course slide
in a rusted groove. They worked for a month or two.

I am 5'5" so I'm not short. But a smaller dumpster would mean more pick ups.
We are charged by the number of visits. More small dumpsters would require
more land -- we don't have it. My estimate is that the dumpster is 6' by 6'
square, and pick up is twice a week. People put out more trash on weekends
so a Tuesday -Thursday pick up does not work. I think we now do Monday
Thursday but Monday Friday would probably work fine.

Recycling pick ups are different -- different trucks.

The spot that is designed for dumpsters has to allow the truck to make a
straight in approach and exit -- our design required an angle or for the
pick up people to get out of the truck to angle the dumpster. They do not
get out of the truck -- EVER, no matter what. And backing out, they have
smashed the keypad for gate entry several times.

The trucks are a hazard. I now understand why large supermarkets, shopping
centers, etc. have a separate entrance and exit for them.

Sharon.
