A huge advantage of YahooGroups is that your list is then listed with tons
of other lists and people can trip over it. And the reverse, once you find
this list and learn how to use YahooGroups, you can find other lists on
topics that interest you. This can be a very valuable resource. My research
has benefited greatly from this resource.

I had been looking for a community to live in for 20 years and would never
have found cohousing except that I tripped over the word in an article in
the NYT that I was just skimming.

On YahooGroups anyone looking for community, housing, intentional
communities, etc -- use whatever keywords you like, and people will find the
list. When people search a subject, the larger lists are listed first so
good lists float to the top. (People do leave bad lists.)

In addition to visibility, the best feature is the ease of access.

There have been blips lately as they change over their servers and redesign
their system. They are infuriating at not responding to queries but that is
improving and they now have an outside group asking for feedback on all
support queries.

The features allow for a moderated list and automatic message threading. The
moderator can delete offensive messages from the archives, review the
messages of new members, make other people moderators, etc.

Messages can be saved in a separate archive if desired.
