just to throw in my $0.02, my friends and I use Mailman to manage most of
our mailing lists. I don't know anything about setting it up, except that
you do need a server to run it on. nifty things:

1) web-based administration. I manage several lists and the GUI is pretty
   intuitive.

2) any number of people can have the admin password.

3) members can configure their own options, including to receive a digest,
   or mark themselves subscribed-but-not-receiving-mail.

4) no spam or popups.
