Loading Cutlery in Dishwashers

We have had many discussions over the years about whether cutlery gets
loaded with handles up or down. Some roommates have felt that I was a real
nitpicker (read also control freak) to care one way or the other. I am not
sure if there is a right way or a wrong way but my request was that we all
agree on one way or the other. It saves some time sorting it all to put
away, as most drawers are arranged so that all the cutlery points the same
way...with the handles towards the front. We eventually agreed on handles
up, using the rational that fingers do not touch the business end and one
would be less likely to grasp a steak knife by the blade, risking injury.
This is an unwritten thing...but comes up whenever a new roommate moves
in...and knives are suddenly found pointing up in amongst the rest. Anyone
else have comments about the "right" way of doing things? What about other
examples of this?
I love these discussions.
