Be careful of water softeners. Most are big polluters of salt. They are starting to be outlawed in parts of Calif because of the harm they cause rivers, wetlands, groundwater and agriculture. Has anyone looked into the magnet based devices that supposedly soften water? I never found out if they really worked. But salt-based water softeners, like salting roads for ice, cause growing levels of environmental damage.
