In our case, we dedicated a small room to just the dishwasher. Why this arbitrary number? I think you'll find that most people have worked in restaurants at some point in their lives. I don't think this makes anyone an expert on what's best for cohousing. It is not the same thing! Only each group can decide what is right for them, though we all have our own opinions. I find it odd that people can rattle off set-ups that cost THOUSANDS of dollars and think that this is preferable to something that costs hundreds, just because restaurants use them. I think it's appliance-envy. Or perhaps unfulfilled dreams of owning a cafe. What else can explain preferring to spend more money than necessary? What about communities trying to keep costs down so someone besides the fabulously wealthy can move in? And I'm sorry, but lifting ANY tray can be a problem for someone with a bad back. This is getting very repetitive, so I imagine I'll have to let someone else get the last word. I'm done for now.
